In the article “The Open Secret of Anti-Mom Bias at Work” by Katherine Goldstein, she talks about how their is a bias againts mothers and ingernal women in the workplace. It is a challenge to fight for becasue those very mothers that are working have the most to loose. This bias against mothers is considered a form of gender bias, whihc can lead to legal action. There have been plenty of cases in which mothers have won discrimination cases because they were treated unfrairly since they had children. Goldstein said ‘Research regularly shows that mothers are routinely viewed as less competent and committed to their jobs’. She then mentions research done by American Journal of Sociology that similar canidates that were pregnant were 37% less to get the job. These women are still not truly free. Discrimination against pregnant women is not a widespread problem and is not talked about nearly enough as it should be. These women were categorized since they are simply women. That is where the category begins and it only grows from there to pregnancy and family life.
Good respond! I agreed with the fact that discrimination of pregnant woman is not talked about. I feel the quote and the statistic you used really stood out to me because we often talk about just the discrimination of females we don’t add in them being mothers. I was surprised by that statistic and this makes me want to learn more about this issue.
